Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the maintenance of public administrative structures in the county-level cities of Russia in 1870s–1880s. This subject is very important for study of practical activities of local governments in spending money on the maintenance of the state and administrative structures of county-level cities, together with the costs of social and economic development of the cities. In particular, barracks, military depots, municipal police, prisons, fire stations were fully provided for the city budget. An analysis of archival materials, legal acts, documents of the local office shows that the county-level cities spent considerable funds from their budgets on the maintenance of state and administrative structures, but coped with the duties assigned to them, thanks to the extensive opportunities for self-government and balanced financial and economic activities.
